Fixed in Salt:

You are invited to Fixed in Salt, a new exhibition that explores salt as both material and metaphor in photography and art.

Alongside Fixed in Salt, visitors will also discover a series of striking assemblages by John Schlesinger. His works will be on view at the Salzmann Photography Center—glimpsed from the street, showcased in the windows, and extending into the outdoor yard—inviting you to explore the exhibition both inside and out.

Made with Salt (or Salt Memories) draws on previous works by Salzmann documenting salt residue in Avalon, Philadelphia and the salt ponds in Maras, Peru.

In the earliest days of photography, salt was essential: salt crystals made it possible to capture light and preserve images on paper. Long before that, salt itself was a source of power and wealth — valued as currency, traded across continents, and used to pay taxes to rulers. Salzmann’s own ancestors collected such taxes for the Tsar, often paid in salt. From this history comes the family name Salzmann — literally, “man of salt.”

Brackish:

This series of photographs, cyanotypes, collages, and poetry examines the connections between nonbinary gender identities and the natural world, with particular attention to the parallels between queer existence and life  outside the boundaries of traditional roles, akin to brackish bay water existing in two ecological worlds: salt and freshwater.
